Top 10 Major Causes of Infertility in Males & Females - Causes of Infertility

Many couples are still facing difficulties getting pregnant even after trying to conceive for a year. They are looking for every possible way to make it happen, but the most crucial question that arises in their minds is why?

Firstly, you need to know, when a couple is called infertile?

According to medical providers, a couple who fails to conceive even after trying unprotected sex for the duration of one year is said to be an infertile couple. Infertility has two types:

1. Primary infertility: It is a diagnosed case when a couple has failed to get pregnant after 1 year of intercourse without using any type of contraception.

2. Secondary Infertility: It is a diagnosed case when a couple fails to conceive a baby after having one or more successful pregnancies.

How conventional is infertility:

Infertility affects one in six men and women of reproductive age. Infertility is not a mark of disgrace but is a treatable condition. It is important for you to understand that you are not alone.

What are the major and the most common causes of infertility in males and females?

Females:

1. Age Factor: Age has a huge impact on a woman’s ability to attain a healthy pregnancy. During the age of 35 and beyond, the ability of women’s ovaries to release eggs for fertilization starts declining rapidly.

At this age, women will have regular ovulation and menstrual cycles but they still may face difficulties in getting pregnant.

2.Uterine Problems: Conditions that affect the uterus or any other part of the female reproductive system are called ‘Uterine Problems’.

There are also conditions that are very common in uterine problems like:

1. Endometriosis: Endometriosis is when tissue grows and is found outside the uterus and appears like the lining of the uterus. It may also grow outside of your uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive parts of your body. It is usually caused due to infections like STDs(sexually transmitted diseases) and other normal bacterial infections.

2. Uterine Fibroids: Uterine fibroid or Leiomyoma are benign tumors of the uterus that may cause severe pain, bleeding, infertility.  (mainly those fibroids that are abutting the endometrium.

3. Uterine Tuberculosis: Uterine Tuberculosis causes infection in the uterus, it is very often that you’ll not find any symptoms at all. This later leads to infertility.

Ovulation Disorders: Ovulation disorders occur when any female has problems in the regulation of reproductive hormones or problems in ovaries.

1. Premature ovarian failure: Premature ovary failure is simply early menopause. This disorder occurs when your ovary no longer produces eggs before the age of 40. It is either due to genetics or chemotherapy.

2. PCOS(Polycystic ovary syndrome): It is a condition that affects the hormone levels of women during childbearing years(From the stage of puberty to menopause). PCOS produces more amount of hormones in women than males and causes them to skip or improper menstruation and makes it difficult for them to get pregnant.

3. Hypothalamic dysfunction: It is a condition when excess physical and emotional stress or a very high and very low weight can affect the production of hormones and affect the ovulation cycle.

4. Damage to Fallopian Tubes: Fallopian tubes are organs in a female reproductive system that connect ovaries to the uterus. During the ovulation period, the fallopian tube carries an egg to the uterus.

And if the fallopian tube is blocked then the sperm cannot get the eggs and get back for the fertilized eggs as the passage would be blocked.

Common causes for the damage to the fallopian tube can be due to sexually transmitted infections, previous surgery in that region, T.B, etc.

Males:

Medical causes:

1. Infection: Infections like sexually transmitted infections, HIV, gonorrhea can result in testicular damage and can block the passage of the sperm to pass through.

2. Blocked tubules: There are many tubes that carry sperms and if they are blocked, sperms cannot pass through. The causes of the blockage can be an injury from surgery, trauma, prior infections, etc.

3. Varicocele: Varicocele leads to low sperm quantity and quality. It is a swelling of the veins and may cause abnormal blood flow.

4. Azoospermia: Azoospermia is when there is no sperm in the semen at all. Although, this condition affects almost 5% of infertile men. It means that no sperm is produced.

5. Medications: Medicines like ulcer drugs, arthritis drugs, Testosterone replacement therapy, and many other medications can affect sperm production.

Health and lifestyle causes:

1. Consumption of Alcohol and smoke: Consuming alcohol can lower testosterone levels and decrease sperm production, whereas smoking can also affect male fertility.

2. Drug intake: Drugs like steroids and cocaine can majorly affect sperm production and male fertility.

Drug intake - cause of infertility

3. Weight: Obesity in many ways can cause hormone changes and lead to male infertility.

Conclusion:

Above are the major causes of infertility due to which couples worry about, but this doesn’t mean putting an end to your dream of being a parent. Also, a large no. of people still believe in a myth, that they can’t conceive a baby after the age of 35 but the fact is YOU CAN!
