IUI –INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION OR ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION (AI)

IUI Treatment, or intrauterine insemination, is a relatively simple first line Infertility treatment. It involves a laboratory procedure to separate fast moving sperms from sluggish or nonmoving sperms. Then these washed sperms with the help of small tube are placed directly into the uterus close to the time of ovulation when the egg is released from the ovary. The rationale is expose more oocytes to more sperms near the site of fertilization and make chances of pregnancy better. This is a minor, painless procedure of 5-7 minutes. PREREQUISITES FOR IUI

1. Ideal age less than 40 years.

2. Patient capable of spontaneous or induced ovulation.

5. Unexplained infertility.

6. Ejaculatory dysfunction.

7. Sperm count of more than 10 million/ml pre-wash or a post-wash count of >5million motile sperms with percentage motility of more than 40%.

HOW IUI IS DONE? IUI is carried out near the time of ovulation, which is detected by Either doing TVS ultrasound or by ovulation kit. The sperm will be inseminated just before or after rupture of the follicle (ovulation). The whole process takes just a few minutes and is usually painless but some women may experience menstruation – like cramps. 1. In male infertility cases, when sperm count is slightly low or if donor sperm is used.

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF IUI.

1. Blocked bilateral fallopian tubes.

2. Poor sperm count or nil sperm count.

3. Sereve endometriosis grade III -IV.

4. women with age more than 40 years.
