What is Infertility and how can you avoid it? - Factors for infertility and Causes.

According to various studies conducted, more than 1 million people in  India struggle to conceive a baby per year. In the United States, the percentage of couples unable to get pregnant is about 10% to 15%. Such a  couple who is unable to have a child even after having regular,  planned, unprotected sexual intercourse for at least over one year is medically termed as an infertile couple.

Infertility in today’s era is not a stigma as it is a treatable condition. Medical science has advanced so rapidly and has simple and effective treatments to help a couple to overcome whatever may be the primary cause of their infertility.

How to identify Infertility?

Infertility is often identified in a couple if they are unable to get pregnant despite having tired, unprotected intercourse for one year. There are no  “symptoms” of infertility since it is not a disease, it is simply a  medical condition that can be treated with some medical procedures.

Do you need to see a doctor?

If it has been less than a year of you trying to get pregnant, we don’t recommend you to see a doctor. However, if you are coming across the following conditions then we recommend you to take a consultation.

For women:

● If You are 35 Years old or older and you have been trying for more than 6 months.
● If You have irregular period cycles with very little flow.
● If You have painful periods.
● If You have had some fertility problems in the past during the conception of 1st child.
● If You have been suffering from endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease or have had multiple miscarriages.
● If You have been treated for cancer.
● If Your fallopian tubes are blocked.
● If Your egg reserve is too low

For men:

● If You have a low sperm count or zero sperm count.
● If You have had a history of testicular or prostate problems and have undergone treatment for it.
● If You have been treated for cancer.
● If You have small testicles or you observe inflammation in your scrotum.
● If Your family has a history of fertility problems.

Is there something you can do to help the situation?

Being diagnosed with infertility doesn’t mean that your dreams of having a  child have to come to an end. It may take some time, some infertile couples will conceive with mild medical intervention and will need medical assistance like IVF/ICSI.

What are the risk factors for infertility?

The use of alcohol, tobacco, and smoking can make it very hard to get pregnant. Smoking causes erectile dysfunction and reduces the sperm count in men. Alcohol too affects the sperm count and also causes low sperm motility. Inactive lifestyle and weight issues are also the causes of hormonal imbalance. That can damage the reproductive system both in men & women.

What can you do?

Check your timing

If you haven’t already, try planning sex around the time of ovulation for the maximum chances of conception. Having regular intercourse, alternate days or 3 days a week, significantly improves the chances of you getting pregnant.
Remember that the days around your ovulation are very fertile. Ovulation occurs halfway through the menstrual cycles. For most women, a cycle is about 28 days long.

For Men

If you want to increase the chances of you having a baby, you can take the following measures:
● Avoid drug and tobacco use.
● Don’t drink too much alcohol.
● Don’t smoke.
● Avoid hot tubs and hot baths since they can affect sperm production and motility.
● Avoid exposure to industrial, environmental toxins since they can affect sperm production.
● Exercise regularly to improve sperm quality.
● Healthy diet

For Women

If you want to conceive, we recommend you take the following steps to increase your chances:
● Don’t smoke.
● Avoid alcohol and drug use.
●  Reduce your caffeine intake. Caffeine interferes with the production of hormones and reduces the chances of you getting pregnant.
● Exercise a little. This should also help you get your menstrual cycle back into balance.
●  Keep a check on your weight. A BMI imbalance affects hormone production, therefore, keeping your weight in check should prove beneficial.
